Some experiences from mathematical modeling studies with academic institutions
The PSD Modeling & Simulation Team at W.L. Gore & Associates has participated in a wide variety of interactions with academia. These include direct sponsored research, participation in research centers, or by sponsoring PhD students throughout their thesis research. We have also presented seminars and lectures at universities, gave conference presentations, and participated and presented problems in study groups. During these interactions, we have worked with mathematicians as well as applied scientists and engineers, collaborated with local, regional, and global universities, and worked towards defining as well as solving a particular problem. We will present our experiences and benefits to our group and the enterprise in these areas and will share some thoughts on when it is useful to work with academia or other industrial institutions or researchers, the impact of networking, and the fine line between knowledge and intellectual property generation.
